Infrabel, Belgium’s infrastructure manager, is investing heavily to extend rail capacity towards Brussels airport. An important project in this respect is the construction of the Diabolo – an underground railway connection between the Brussels-National-Airport station and the future Schaerbeek-Mechelen rail line along the central reservation of the E19 motorway. The Diabolo, which will be funded with private capital by the project company Northern Diabolo NV, will be opened to rail operators by mid-2012.
